Custom Closets and Pantry Storage in Miami Beach

Floating shelves install Miami →

A closet with a single rod and shelf wastes most of its real storage potential. We install wire, laminate, or modular closet systems sized to your exact space — double hang, shelving, drawers, and shoe storage — so every foot of the closet actually gets used.

Before any hardware gets chosen, a closet on this island has to answer three questions: where the clothes hang, where the shelves sit, and whether drawers get a wall to themselves or an island down the center — none of it settled until the door swing and the switch location are both accounted for. A pantry works through the same three questions at a shallower depth, with tight spacing for cans and jars and a taller section reserved for anything bulky. The wall behind that decision changes as you move around Miami Beach: plaster over old masonry or furring in a South Beach Art Deco building, metal studs over poured concrete in the Mid-Beach and North Beach towers, and everywhere, salt air off the Atlantic working faster on exposed metal than it would a mile inland. What goes on the wall — the shelving, the rods, the drawer boxes — is ours to build. Structural changes belong to a licensed contractor; electrical work for a closet light belongs, separately, to a licensed electrician.

Tell us about the room before you tell us about the finish you want. Is it a narrow reach-in in a prewar South Beach building, a full walk-in in a Mid-Beach tower, or a shared closet where two people are working around each other before work every morning. Give (786) 788-8714 the dimensions, the depth, and who is using it, and the plan for hanging length, shelving, and drawers comes from those answers rather than from a photo you saw online.

The closet that generates the most careful planning here is not the biggest one — it is the one that used to be something else. In more than a few South Beach Art Deco buildings, what a listing calls a walk-in closet started life as a small maid's room or a second bathroom off the bedroom decades ago, later gutted and folded into the closet count. That history leaves an odd shape: a door on the wrong wall, a jog where old plumbing used to run, a ceiling a foot lower than the rest of the unit. Building that closet's system means measuring the actual room rather than assuming it is a rectangle, and it is one reason a photo from the doorway plus one from the far corner tells us more than a floor plan does. Our technicians work across South Beach, Mid-Beach, and North Beach, and speak English, Spanish, and Russian on the job.

South Beach's Art Deco Closets: Old Walls, Odd Shapes

South Beach's 1920s and 1930s buildings were not designed around modern closets, so the storage that exists today is often a room converted after the fact rather than a space built for the purpose. Behind the plaster is sometimes furring over masonry, sometimes an older wood-framed partition added when the unit was split or renovated, and the two take different fixings. A shelf run has to be planned to the room's real corners and any jog in the wall, not to a standard width pulled from a kit.

Because so much of South Beach sits inside areas with historic-building oversight, we treat the closet as interior work — building and shelving inside an existing room — and keep it that way. Where a job would touch anything visible from outside the unit or change the building's structure, we say so before starting rather than after, and that is usually the point where the building's own review process, not ours, becomes the next step.

Mid-Beach and North Beach Towers: Building Access First

Along Collins Avenue in Mid-Beach and up through North Beach, most of the housing is condo towers, and the closet itself tends to be a straightforward metal-stud partition over a poured concrete shell — an easier wall to fix into than old masonry, but one that lives inside a building with its own rules. Nearly every tower here wants proof of insurance on file before the front desk will wave a crew through, and a number of buildings also require the service elevator booked ahead of time instead of assumed to be open.

We get that paperwork moving as soon as your building name comes through rather than waiting for the appointment day to find out what is required. On La Gorce Island and the single-family streets tucked behind the towers, the closets sit in older houses with their own wood framing, so the same visit can mean two very different walls depending on which side of Collins Avenue the address falls on.

Salt Air, Seasonal Owners, and Normandy Isles Closets

Living this close to the Atlantic changes what belongs inside a closet system, not just what is bolted to the wall outside one. Steel hanging rods, cheap drawer slides, and uncoated hardware corrode faster within a few blocks of the beach than the same parts would inland, especially in a closet with an exterior wall or a window that gets left cracked for airflow. We spec stainless or coated hardware in those closets by default rather than waiting for a customer to ask why a rod is already showing rust.

On Normandy Isles and the older single-family streets of North Beach, a good number of owners are seasonal, present for part of the year and reachable by phone the rest of it. We coordinate access through a building or a keyholder, complete the closet, and send photos and an itemized invoice so the job can be approved and paid for without anyone needing to be on the island that week.

Closet Organization in Miami Beach — questions we get asked

Is there a set rate for a Miami Beach closet system, or does every unit get priced differently?

Every unit gets priced on its own, because a narrow South Beach reach-in and a full Mid-Beach walk-in with a drawer island call for entirely different amounts of material. Expect a technician to note the wall type and what needs to fit inside first, with a free written quote to follow, nothing charged in advance.

Who ends up doing the actual work in my unit, and where do my things go in the meantime?

One Gold Hands crew member, introduced by name ahead of time. Clothes and boxes already in the closet are relocated to a protected spot rather than shuffled aside mid-drill, and any accidental damage gets flagged to you in writing that same day.

My building's board has rules about interior work and older units. Will that block a closet install?

Rarely, once the board sees exactly what is planned. Most South Beach and Mid-Beach associations are protecting the building's structure and its historic exterior, not an interior closet nobody outside your unit will ever see. Send us the management contact and we handle the certificate of insurance and any access paperwork ahead of the visit.

We're a couple sharing one closet. Is there a fair way to divide it, or does someone always lose out?

There's a fair way, and it isn't a rod cut exactly down the middle. Describe how each of you actually dresses — hanging-heavy or folding-heavy, shoe count, where accessories live — and the split gets sized to those real habits instead of an even measurement that leaves one side spilling over within a month.

My apartment is a rental. Is there anything I need to clear with the landlord first?

The wall type is the thing worth asking about, not just a yes-or-no on the work itself. Older South Beach masonry generally patches and repaints cleanly once anchors come out; a stud wall in a rented tower unit is more likely to need an actual patch. Mention it's a rental and expect a straight answer on which applies to your building.

Does the salt air actually reach inside a closet, or is that only an outdoor problem here?

It reaches inside more than people expect, especially in a closet on an exterior wall or near a window left open for airflow. Standard steel rods and drawer hardware pit and rust faster this close to the water. We use stainless or coated hardware in those closets as the default, not as an upgrade you have to request.

Do you design the closet layout or do I need my own plan?

We can work from a kit you already bought, or help plan the layout based on your closet's dimensions and what you need to store — most customers appreciate the input rather than guessing.

Wire shelving or a modular/laminate system — which is better?

Wire shelving is more affordable and ventilated, good for basic reach-ins. Modular laminate systems look more finished and support drawers and specialty storage — we will help you decide based on budget and the closet's use.
