Hanging a single picture is easy; hanging a gallery wall so it is level, evenly spaced, and at the right eye-line takes more than a hammer and a nail. We hang everything from a single mirror to a full gallery wall, using proper anchors for the weight and wall type so nothing shifts or falls.

On a barrier island the fixing matters as much as the frame. Miami Beach walls run from 1930s Art Deco plaster in South Beach to concrete shells and metal-stud partitions in the Collins Avenue towers, and the salt air works on hardware year-round. Reading the wall, then matching the anchor to the weight and to the air it will sit in, is the part that happens before the free written quote is issued.

Gold Hands takes mirror and picture work across the City of Miami Beach — South Beach in 33139, the oceanfront stretch of Mid-Beach in 33140, and North Beach and Normandy Isles in 33141. Tell us which way the wall faces and how many blocks you are from the water, add a photograph of it, and (786) 788-8714 returns a free written quote with the right hardware already in it. The job the island produces most is an over-console mirror in a rented apartment that will have to come off the wall again when the lease ends. The insurance certificate is lodged with the front desk before anyone reaches the lobby.

The island splits into two very different jobs. In the low-rise Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival buildings of South Beach, and in the MiMo blocks and 1930s–1950s houses of Normandy Isles, the walls are plaster with tight interior layouts and decades of patching behind the paint. In the Collins Avenue towers of Mid-Beach and the newer oceanfront buildings, the home is many floors up, the structure is concrete with metal-stud partitions, and the front desk controls access. Both sit within a few blocks of the Atlantic, which is why we care about what the fixing is made of and not only how much it will hold.

Art Deco plaster and older Miami Beach walls

Much of 33139 and 33141 was built between the 1920s and the 1960s, and those walls are plaster rather than drywall. Plaster is hard, brittle and unforgiving: drilled at the wrong speed with the wrong bit it chips out in a ring far wider than the screw, and in a historically sensitive building that small mistake is a conspicuous one. We drill it slowly, we test for hollow areas before committing, and we work out in advance whether there is masonry behind the plaster — common on the exterior and party walls here — or lath and a void, which calls for a completely different anchor. Interior layouts in these buildings tend to be compact, so wall space is at a premium and the alignment of a gallery wall matters more when you see it from four feet away.

The Beach also has a lot of very heavy glass. Full-width mirrors were fixed straight onto plaster in bathrooms, over vanities and along hallways decades ago, sometimes with adhesive and sometimes with clips drilled into the wall, and replacing one begins with getting the old one down intact. That is the part people underestimate: the glass is heavy and sharp, and behind it the plaster is often bare, scarred or missing. We take the old mirror out, remove the fixings, make the wall good so the new piece lands flat, and take the old glass away with us. Where a building is subject to historic preservation rules, we keep the work reversible and flag anything that should have written approval before it goes ahead.

Collins Avenue towers: condo rules and a service-elevator slot in Miami Beach

In the Mid-Beach towers along Collins Avenue and the newer oceanfront buildings, the logistics are often larger than the work itself. Management typically expects a vendor certificate of insurance lodged in advance, a booked service elevator, work inside approved hours, and the crew signed in and out at the desk. Give us your management office at booking and that paperwork goes in ahead of us. The practical trap on this island is size: a wide mirror or a mounted projector screen has to fit through the service lift and the corridor turns, and it is far better to establish that over the telephone than to discover it with the piece already in the building.

The walls in these units behave differently too. The structural shell is concrete and takes masonry anchors and a hammer drill; the partitions between rooms are drywall on metal studs, which will not hold a heavy mirror on two screws the way a timber stud would. For anything substantial we spread the load across two studs with a cleat or a plate rather than trusting a single point. Balconies and terraces are their own question: those surfaces are commonly association property in Miami Beach buildings, so anything fixed out there waits for written approval from the board before a drill comes out of the bag.

Salt air, humidity and seasonal owners on Miami Beach

A few blocks from the ocean, salt in the air gets into everything metal. Hinges, locks and exterior fittings corrode here much faster than they do inland, and hanging hardware is no exception — a plain steel hook or a bargain wire on a heavy mirror in a bathroom, a hallway that opens onto the beach, or a screened terrace will rust and stain the wall long before the picture is tired of the spot. We specify stainless or coastal-rated hardware where the conditions call for it, and we treat any wall that gets salt-laden air as an exterior condition even when it is technically indoors. Humidity does its own work on unframed pieces: canvases, tapestries and woven hangings curl away from the wall unless they are given proper support along the top edge.

A large share of Miami Beach owners are here for part of the year, and we work around that. Where a building allows it we coordinate access with management, complete the hanging while you are away, and send photographs and an itemised invoice so the placement can be approved remotely. Seasonal owners also tend to have the longer lists — the art that was bought over several winters, the shelves that never went up, the medicine cabinet still in its box — and that is genuinely better done in one visit than in three. Where a lighted medicine cabinet needs power run to it, or anything requires a permit, that goes to a licensed electrician; Gold Hands does the mounting and the making good.

Picture & Mirror Hanging in Miami Beach — questions we get asked

How much will it cost to hang art and mirrors in my Miami Beach apartment?

Nothing is published, because a quote on this island follows the wall and the salt as much as the artwork. Photograph the pieces, photograph the wall they are meant for, note which one is heaviest, and (786) 788-8714 sends the whole thing back written and free. If your building has access rules that add time, that is priced in the quote rather than appearing as a surprise afterwards.

Can I trust the person coming into my Miami Beach unit while I am not there?

That is precisely why we work the way we do. You are given the technician's name in advance, and the insurance documents reach your building management without you having to ask. For owners who are off the island for the season, we coordinate access through the front desk and send photographs of every piece in place along with an itemised invoice, so nothing is hung permanently before you have seen it.

My Miami Beach condo board has rules about vendors and about the building's historic status. Does that stop the job?

Rarely, but it does change the order of things. We lodge the certificate of insurance, book the service elevator and keep to the approved hours. In a historically protected South Beach building we keep the work reversible and confined to interior surfaces, and if a proposal touches anything the association owns — a terrace wall, a corridor, an exterior face — it waits for written approval from the board before we start. We would rather delay a week than put you in front of a fine.

Is a heavy mirror safe over a fireplace or a vanity in an old Miami Beach building?

It is, provided the wall is read correctly first. Masonry gets percussion drilling and anchors rated far past what the piece weighs. Plaster on lath, and the metal-stud partitions in the towers, get the weight spread along a cleat rather than concentrated on a pair of screws. What we never do here is trust adhesive strips with a heavy mirror above head height in a humid coastal building — those fail quietly, and above a fireplace or a vanity a failure is not a small event.

I am renting in South Beach. Will the holes be a problem at the end of my lease?

Say so while the quote is being written and the hardware is chosen for a wall that has to be handed back: the gentlest fixing that is still safe, as few of them as the arrangement allows, and none of them where a repair would sit in the eyeline. Plaster and drywall both take filler and paint without argument, and we will return and do it ahead of your inspection. Shrinking an anchor below what the piece weighs is the one economy nobody here is offered.

Why does hanging hardware rust so quickly on Miami Beach?

Ocean air leaves salt on every metal surface it touches and then keeps at it, so plain steel hooks, screws and hanging wire give up within a few blocks of the sand in a way they never would further west. The stain runs down the wall before the fixing actually fails, which is how most people notice. We use stainless or coastal-rated hardware where the air and humidity justify it, particularly in bathrooms, hallways open to the terrace, and anywhere on the ocean side of a building in 33139, 33140 or 33141.

Can you hang a gallery wall so everything is spaced evenly?

Yes — we lay out the arrangement with paper templates or laser measuring before drilling a single hole, so spacing and alignment are right the first time.

How do you hang a heavy mirror safely?

For anything over about 25-30 lbs, we typically use a French cleat or heavy-duty toggle anchors rather than a single hook, so the weight is distributed and secure.
