Pendants over a Hollywood kitchen counter come down to two measurements and one honest conversation. The measurements are the spacing, which is taken from the counter's own length rather than from the ceiling above it, and the drop, which is judged from the eyeline of somebody sitting at the counter instead of from the chain supplied in the box. The conversation is about what the ceiling can carry and what feeds it. We hang fixtures on outlets that test sound, mount canopies and track systems chosen for the weight going on them, and set each position and height so the finished run reads straight from every seat in the room. Putting in a new outlet, running a circuit, moving a switch or adding a dimmer where none exists is a licensed electrician's work, and that gets said before you order fixtures, not once the old one is already down.

Lead with the counter. How long it runs, how many pendants you are picturing, whether stools sit along one side or both, what the ceiling height is and what hangs there today. One photograph shot from the doorway, taking in the whole ceiling above that counter, replaces a lot of description. Send that to (786) 788-8714; what comes back is how many heads that counter really wants, where they should land, and whether the fixture you have chosen will work with what is above the plasterboard.

Three quite different Hollywoods produce three different versions of this job. On the beach side of the Intracoastal it is condominium buildings and apartments, a large share of them holiday lets, where the work has to fit between guests and the building has a process. Central Hollywood is bungalows and ranch houses from the 1920s through the 1950s with plaster walls and terrazzo underfoot. Hollywood Hills is settled mid-century block houses on wider lots, many of them opened up inside over the years. The fixture might be identical in all three; the ceiling, the access and the risks below the ladder are not. Where the layout you want needs a new box cut in or a circuit run, that goes to a licensed electrician when the quote is written rather than being improvised.

Terrazzo, plaster and old ceilings in central Hollywood

The floors in these 1920s-to-1950s houses are the thing we are most careful about, and people are often surprised that the floor is the concern on a ceiling job. Original terrazzo is beautiful and it is unforgiving: a dropped driver or a fixture shade that slips leaves a chip that cannot be patched invisibly. So ladders go down on protection, tools are tethered or kept in a belt rather than balanced on a step, and the shades stay in their boxes until the moment the last one goes up.

Overhead, the surface is often plaster rather than plasterboard, sometimes with a later ceiling installed beneath the original. That changes what a fixing does. Plaster crumbles around a poorly placed anchor and the failure is not always obvious on the day it happens, which is the worst kind. We find where the framing actually runs, fix into it where we can, and tell you plainly if the position you want has nothing behind it worth hanging a run of glass from. In a house of this age the existing ceiling box may also be older than the fixture you have bought, and whether it is rated for the new weight is a genuine question rather than a formality.

Turnover windows and building access on Hollywood Beach

Kitchen lighting in a holiday let on the island has to happen in the gap between a check-out and the next check-in, and the whole visit has to be planned backwards from that. Tell us the window and what is in the unit already — whether the pendants have been delivered, whether they are in the apartment or downstairs with the front desk, whether the old fixture is still working. A run of three heads set out carefully takes the time it takes, and it is better to know before the day whether that fits inside your gap or wants a longer vacancy.

The buildings themselves add their own sequence. Management here generally expects a contractor visit to be registered, paperwork to be on file, the service elevator to be reserved and the work to sit inside stated hours, and a couple of the older towers want notice measured in days. Give us the building name early and that is arranged before the date is fixed. The salt air on this side of the Intracoastal is also worth a thought when choosing a finish, because plating that would last indefinitely inland has a harder life a block from the sand.

Opened-up kitchens and stranded outlets in Hollywood Hills

The mid-century houses inland were built with the kitchen shut off from the dining room, and an enormous number of them have since had that wall taken out. What follows is predictable: an island appears in the middle of the new space, and the ceiling outlet that once hung over a dining table is now somewhere between the island and the sofa. It is the most common reason people here call about pendants at all, and the fix is decided by distance. A short drift can be absorbed by a canopy; a long one usually cannot.

Ceiling height is the second factor in these houses, and it is often lower than people remember once they are standing on a stool at the island. Less height means a shorter stem, a shade that hides the lamp from a seated angle, and fewer heads rather than more. Where a fan holds the centre of the room and is staying, the pendant run has to be planned around it — that is a separate subject and we keep a ceiling fan page for it. What the counter itself needs is usually simpler than the catalogue suggests.

Neighborhoods and ZIP codes we cover in Hollywood

Light Fixture Installation in Hollywood — questions we get asked

How do you arrive at a price for pendant lighting in Hollywood?

After looking at the ceiling, never from a description alone. One fixture on a sound existing outlet is a short job; three heads set out over an island in a plaster-ceilinged bungalow is a different afternoon with different care in it. Tell us the counter length, how many lights you want and the neighbourhood, and send a photo looking up at the ceiling. The answer comes back in writing — the fixtures, the way they are fixed, what is likely to be behind that surface, and where our work stops and a licensed trade's starts. That scope is free, and it is the reference point once the work is finished.

What happens to my terrazzo floor and my counter while the work is done in my Hollywood kitchen?

Both get covered before anything else happens. The worktop takes a padded cover with a rigid panel over it, the terrazzo gets its own drop cloth under and around the ladder, and the ladder is footed on that cloth however convenient the counter would look. Tools stay in a belt instead of on the ladder top, which is the single biggest reason terrazzo gets chipped on jobs like this. Packaging and the old fixture leave with us at the end unless you want the original kept.

My Hollywood Beach building wants documents and an elevator booking before a contractor comes up. Does that slow things down?

Only when we are told late. Nearly every tower on the island asks for the visit to be registered with management, the usual documents on file, and the goods lift reserved, and allowing a day for the office to process it is sensible. Give us the building name when you first write and it is dealt with before a date is agreed. Inland, in central Hollywood and the Hills, none of this applies and the only question is when suits you.

There is exactly one outlet above my Hollywood island and I want three pendants. What is the truthful answer?

There are two routes we can do and one we cannot. A canopy carrying a three-head rating runs them all off the point you have, and track anchored into sound framing lets the heads slide to wherever the island suits them — both ours. Drops standing on their own at three chosen spots means fresh boxes cut in and wired back to the circuit, which is licensed electrical work. In an older house with plaster above, that is genuinely the right trade to be doing it.

I rent in Hollywood. What am I allowed to change above the kitchen counter?

A fixture on an existing outlet is normally the safe boundary, and we bag and label the original so the place goes back the way you found it. Anything that leaves permanent holes — track, fresh fixings, altered wiring — alters the owner's property and needs agreeing first, and in a condominium the association may want a say too. A written note of what we propose is easy to forward, and it lands much better than trying to describe a mounting canopy in a text message.

I let my Hollywood apartment to guests. Which pendant fixtures survive that best?

Ones that are hung high enough not to be walked into, with shades that are not going to be knocked off by somebody reaching across the counter with a suitcase in hand. Glass at head height in a rental is a maintenance item waiting to happen, and a slightly higher run with a sturdier shade will outlast a delicate one by years. If a head does get damaged between guests, having bought a fixture from a range that is still in production matters more than the original price did.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there's currently just a light?

In most cases, yes. We verify the electrical box can support the fan's weight and motion, and upgrade the box if needed — that may add a small cost but keeps the installation safe.

Do you install recessed lighting?

Yes, into existing ceilings. Pricing depends on the number of lights and whether new wiring is needed to reach them.
