Nothing happens when you flip the switch, and that one sentence covers at least four different repairs. The one everybody assumes — the motor has died — is the least common of them. A unit that makes no sound whatsoever is usually a unit receiving no electricity, and electricity goes missing in a short list of places: the reset button on the underside, which trips on overload and stays tripped until something pushes it home; the wall switch or the counter-top air button that operates it; the socket in the back of the cabinet, which normally feeds the dishwasher too; and the breaker in the panel. A machine that hums is a different story with a different fix, because a hum proves current is arriving. Gold Hands works that sequence in Miami kitchens before anyone starts talking about a replacement, since the honest answer is frequently a part rather than a machine. When the motor really has finished, the next question belongs to whatever is sitting in your hallway: horsepower, grind chamber size, and whether it hangs on the mounting ring already clamped to your sink. Swapping a unit onto the supply and drain already in place, the mount, the sink flange and the run back to the trap is our work. Gold Hands is not a licensed plumbing or electrical contractor, so a circuit that is genuinely dead, a new switch or socket, moving the waste line, or anything Miami-Dade wants permitted is handed to the licensed trade — and you hear which one you have before a quote is written.
The message that arrives in our inbox most often reads almost exactly like this: I need to have my garbage disposal replaced or repaired, not sure, does not turn on. Not sure is the correct place to be standing, and it is also why the first visit is a diagnosis and not a sale. Across the City of Miami and the county pockets stitched into it — Little Havana and Little Havana West, Allapattah, the Health District and Overtown, Wynwood, Coral Way and Shenandoah, the towers downtown and beside the port, and west through Flagami, Westchester, Olympia Heights and Tamiami — three answers decide how the call goes. Say what the switch does when you flip it: silence, or a hum. Say whether anything else in the kitchen went out at the same moment, because that points at the panel rather than the appliance. Say whether the button underneath has popped out, and whether pressing it bought you a minute or nothing at all. With those three in hand, a text to (786) 788-8714 gets you a straight reply about what is likely wrong and what putting it right involves. Our crews will talk it through in English, Spanish or Russian, whichever is easier.
The second most common message already has a carton in it: client provides disposal, yes I will provide the garbage disposal, the existing disposal needs to be replaced. That is usually fine, and occasionally it is the entire problem. Two things about the unit in your hallway decide how long the swap runs. The first is the maker. A replacement from the same brand as the one hanging there generally drops straight onto the mounting assembly already clamped to the sink, and the afternoon is short. A different brand often wants a different mount, which means the sink flange comes out, old putty is scraped away, and a fresh flange is bedded and drawn down from below before the machine goes up at all — a longer job, and a different figure on the estimate. The second is bulk. Horsepower and chamber volume grow together, so a stronger unit is a taller unit; under a shallow bowl, or in a cabinet where the trap arm sits high, the model you bought may simply not fit the space.

Silence at the switch: reading a dead unit in a Miami kitchen
An appliance that makes no noise at all is, far more often than not, an appliance being given nothing to work with, and there are only a handful of places for the current to disappear. Our technician takes them in order instead of guessing. The overload reset underneath comes first, because it latches out and stays out; a machine that runs for thirty seconds after being reset and then dies again is telling a very different story from one that never wakes up. Then the control, which around here is anything from a toggle on the backsplash to an air button on the counter with a bellows hose running to a box inside the cabinet — those hoses perish, and the failure looks identical to a dead motor from where you are standing. Then the receptacle behind the cabinet wall. Then the panel itself.
Which of those is likeliest depends on where you live. In the bungalows and walk-up apartments from the 1920s through the 1950s around Calle Ocho, and in the older houses and duplexes through Allapattah and West Little River, kitchen wiring is often original with decades of additions layered over it, and the grinder is the newest thing on a very old circuit. In the concrete-block ranch houses of Westchester, Olympia Heights and Tamiami, the more common finding is a GFCI device that tripped somewhere else entirely and took the under-sink socket down with it. In the high-rise units along Biscayne Boulevard and around the Government Center the wiring is generally sound and the culprit is the control or the appliance's own overload. If what we find is a circuit that is dead back at the panel, or a switch or socket needing replacement, that is licensed electrical work, and you are told so standing there rather than after an improvisation.
Repair or replace: what a Miami technician is actually weighing up
The deciding question is never age, it is what the machine does once it is definitely being fed. If it turns and drains and the whole complaint was that it would not start, the fault lives in the control, the socket or the overload, and nothing has to be bought. If it turns but sounds coarse and the shaft has play in it, the bearings are on their way out and the unit is finished whatever else gets replaced. If it does nothing while the reset holds in and there is voltage at the socket, the winding has failed and no part in a box will bring it back. If the breaker throws the instant the switch is touched, we stop, because that is either a short inside the motor or a circuit carrying more than it should, and both of those answers are worth more than a guess and belong to an electrician.
There is a fourth outcome people rarely expect, and we say it out loud whenever we find it: the appliance is fine, and the leak, the odour or the slow drain that prompted the call is coming from the trap, the dishwasher branch or the flange gasket. Replacing a working motor to cure a plumbing symptom is money poured away, and across these fourteen ZIP codes we have talked customers out of that purchase more than once. When the verdict genuinely is replacement, the written estimate is put in front of you with the reasoning attached, so you can see which half of it is the machine and which half is the labour.
Cabinets, towers and terrazzo: reaching the work across Miami
All of this happens in the two feet beneath your sink, so what is kept there is part of the job. Before a single connection is broken the cabinet is emptied onto a sheet on the floor — cleaning bottles, bin liners, the collection of sponges — because a grinder comes down full of water and the trap comes down with it. Nothing is thrown out without asking and everything goes back where it was found. The unit is heavier than it looks and hangs from a ring that releases all at once, so it is carried on a knee or a block from the moment that ring is turned. In the 1920s and 1930s houses along the Coral Way corridor and through Shenandoah, where original terrazzo and tile run right up to the cabinet, that is not fussiness; it is the difference between a swap and a floor repair.
Buildings add a layer of their own. In the mid-rises around the Government Center and the north bank of the river, and in the towers near Bayside and PortMiami, crews work against metal-stud partitions over a concrete shell, management normally wants a certificate of insurance on file, and the service elevator and loading dock run on booked slots rather than goodwill. Send us the management contact with your first message and that paperwork travels ahead of the technician. Out in the single-family blocks west of the river, through Flagami and Tamiami, the constraints are smaller and more physical: a narrow driveway, street parking, and a cabinet with a back panel nobody ever intended to open.

Garbage Disposal Installation & Repair in Miami — questions we get asked
What does a garbage disposal replacement in Miami cost, and how is the figure put together?
There is no number on this page on purpose, because the same enquiry covers an afternoon and a twenty-minute call-out. The written estimate is free and it is built once four things are known: whether the fault is the appliance or the power reaching it, whether your replacement hangs on the mount already there or needs the sink flange taken out and re-bedded, how much room the cabinet leaves around the trap arm, and whether any part of the work belongs to an electrician rather than to us. A photograph of the unit's label, one of the cabinet interior and one of the switch answers most of that by text before anybody drives over.
Who will be under my Miami sink, and what happens to everything stored down there?
One of our own technicians, named to you before the visit. The cabinet is cleared onto a dust sheet first, the standing water in the chamber goes into a bucket rather than onto your floor, and the contents go back in the order they came out. If the diagnosis turns out to be a dead circuit or a failed switch, you hear it at that moment, the old unit goes back up working exactly as it was, and you are not billed for finishing something that could not honestly be finished.
I live in a Miami condo tower. Does the building have to sign off on a disposal swap?
The swap itself happens entirely inside your unit, downstream of your own stop valve, so it is rarely the association's decision. The logistics are. Management downtown and along the Biscayne corridor generally wants insurance paperwork on file, a booked service-elevator window and work kept inside approved hours, and some want notice whenever water is being opened up at all. One thing genuinely is worth asking before you buy anything: a few buildings restrict or prohibit disposals on their stacks, and that is a question for management, not for us.
Is it ever worth repairing a garbage disposal in Miami rather than putting in a new one?
Often, and we will tell you when. A tripped overload, a failed wall switch, a perished air-button hose, a dead socket, a leaking flange gasket, a split dishwasher inlet and a loose mounting ring are all repairs, and none of them needs a new appliance. What cannot sensibly be repaired is a burnt-out winding, a seized or rattling bearing, or a corroded-through grind chamber, because the parts cost approaches the machine and the rest of it is the same age. The diagnosis comes before the recommendation, not after.
I rent in Miami. What does my landlord need to agree to before you come out?
Get it in writing first, because unlike a seat or a fitting this one is not reversible — the old appliance is disconnected, the mount is disturbed and something new hangs in its place. Most owners are relieved to hear a trade is doing it rather than a tenant with a borrowed wrench, and many will deal with us directly once you pass on the contact. Two things need the owner specifically: anything involving the circuit, a new socket or a replacement switch, which is their electrician's call, and the decision about which unit goes in, since it is their appliance and they keep it when you leave. The one that came out stays on site for them to see.
Does Miami plumbing shorten the life of a garbage disposal?
The grinder usually outlives the drain it empties into, and that is the local catch. In the pre-1960s houses through Olympia Heights, West Westchester and the older blocks west of the river, the waste line behind the cabinet is frequently original galvanised or cast iron, narrowed by decades of scale, and fitting a stronger machine to it simply sends more solids into a pipe that was already struggling. Our water leaves mineral on everything it dries on, which is why the flange gasket and the ring bolts on an older install are checked as a matter of course. When the real problem turns out to be the drain line itself rather than the appliance, that is a licensed plumber's job and we say so plainly.
My disposal just hums but doesn't spin — do I need a new one?
Not always. A hum with no spin usually means the flywheel is jammed. We free it with an Allen wrench through the bottom reset hole and test it before recommending a replacement.
Do you supply the disposal unit?
You can buy your own model, or we can pick one up at cost. We will size the horsepower to your household's typical use if you want a recommendation.
