A garbage disposal that hums but will not spin, or a sink that backs up every time it runs, is almost always fixable without replacing the unit. We install new disposals on existing under-sink wiring and plumbing, swap out units that have finally failed, and clear the jams that cause most of the panic calls we get.

An Aventura disposal that hums and will not turn is rarely a dead motor. The hum says current is reaching the windings while the grinding plate is held still, because something has wedged itself between the spinning impeller and the fixed ring it grinds against — a fruit stone, a splinter of bone, a bottle cap nobody will admit to. A good share of those units are freed and back in service inside one visit, and we would rather say that out loud than sell a replacement nobody needs. In a tower on Biscayne Boulevard there is a second question the hum does not answer: what the dishwasher line is doing, and whether the outlet in that cabinet is switched or live.

Flip the switch and listen, then tell us exactly what you heard — a low steady hum that holds for as long as you keep the switch up, a hum that dies after a second or two, or no sound whatsoever — and whether the unit ground normally the last time anybody used it. Those three details separate a jam from an overload from a motor that has finished, and they cost you nothing to collect. Ring or text (786) 788-8714 with them. Add the make printed on the body, if the label happens to face the cupboard door, and we can usually name the sort of visit you are booking before a technician leaves the van.

What Gold Hands is, plainly: a handyman company, not a plumbing firm and not an electrical contractor. Freeing a seized grinding chamber. Resetting a motor that shut itself off on heat. Taking a failed unit off its bracket and hanging its successor there on the supply that already exists. Renewing the seal where the sink flange meets the stainless. Putting the drain elbow and the dishwasher inlet back together cleanly to the trap. All of that is ours and we do it properly. The moment a job needs cable it does not already have, a receptacle where the cupboard has never carried one, the waste line moved, or a Miami-Dade permit raised, it belongs to a licensed plumber or a licensed electrician — and you hear us say so in the kitchen, not in a message the next day.

What the hum under an Aventura sink actually means

A disposal has one moving assembly: a plate that spins, carrying two blunt swivelling lugs that throw waste outward against a perforated ring. Nothing in there is sharp and nothing is meant to cut. When a hard object drops into the gap between the lugs and the ring, the plate locks, the motor still receives power, and the noise you hear is a stalled winding trying to start against a load it cannot move. Left holding that switch, the motor heats, and a thermal cut-out inside the housing pops a small red button on the underside to save it. Plenty of Aventura kitchens have a unit sitting dead because that button has been out for a year and nobody knew it existed.

The order of operations matters more than the fix. Power comes off at the wall switch and then at the source feeding that cabinet — the plug pulled if the unit is corded, the breaker opened if it is wired in — and it stays off before a hand, a tool or a light goes anywhere near the chamber. There is no version of this job where that step is skipped because the unit seemed quiet. Only once the thing is genuinely dead does a technician use the hex socket cast into the underside of most models to rock the plate back and forth until whatever is trapped comes loose, retrieve it, and reset the overload.

Then comes the honest part, and it is the part that decides whether you spend money twice. A motor that has been stalled and cooked has bearings that may or may not have survived it. We run the unit under water, listen to it under load, and tell you which of two things we think you have: a disposal that jammed, was cleared, and will carry on for years, or one that will hum again in a week or a month because the bearings are already gone. A unit that frees, runs, then stalls again shortly afterwards has told you clearly that it is finished, and at that point replacing it is the cheaper decision rather than the upsell.

Tower kitchens, dishwashers and building rules in Aventura

In the condominium buildings lined up along Biscayne Boulevard and the Intracoastal, the disposal is very often the drain path for the dishwasher as well. The dishwasher's hose enters a spigot on the side of the disposal body and empties into the grinding chamber, which means a jammed or blocked unit does not stay a single symptom for long. Water that cannot leave the dishwasher sits in its base, the cycle ends with a puddle, and the owner concludes there are two appliances failing at once. There is usually one fault, under the sink, and it is the one making the noise.

The building side is a scheduling problem rather than a technical one. Management along this stretch generally wants a certificate of insurance on file, a service elevator and loading dock reserved, entry through the dock rather than the lobby, and the work kept inside permitted hours. None of that is difficult, but it has lead time, so it is arranged before the day instead of argued at a front desk. A replacement unit and its box go up and the old one comes down inside the same booked window wherever the schedule allows it.

One more thing that belongs to towers specifically: the cabinet is usually full. Detergent, bleach, a bucket, spare bulbs, the things that accumulate under a kitchen sink for fifteen years. That comes out onto a protected surface before anyone lies down in there, gets put back where it was, and anything that has been leaking quietly onto the base gets mentioned to you rather than quietly wiped and forgotten. Water under a cabinet in a stacked building is not only your problem, and you should know about it the day it is found.

Ojus and Skylake kitchens share the Aventura zip and not much else

West of the towers, 33180 becomes single-family houses and low-rise condominiums in Ojus and Skylake, and a disposal call there is a different afternoon entirely. There is no dock to book and no lift to reserve. There is also, in a fair number of these kitchens, an older hardwired unit with no plug at all, which means isolating it properly means finding the right breaker in a panel that may or may not be labelled honestly.

Age is the other difference. Many of these units went in during a kitchen update a long time ago and have been quietly grinding ever since, which is worth knowing, because a fifteen-year-old motor that has just been cooked on a stall is a poorer bet than a four-year-old one that met a peach stone last night. The same clearing work happens either way; the recommendation afterwards is not the same, and we will give you the one we would act on ourselves.

Townhome enclaves near the golf course sit between the two worlds. You generally have your own shutoff and your own panel, but you share a wall and an association with the neighbours, so we treat those visits like small-building visits — ask what the association wants in writing, keep the noisy part short, protect the walkway that the old unit is carried out over, and take the failed appliance away with us rather than leaving it beside a front door.

Garbage Disposal Installation & Repair in Aventura — questions we get asked

How do you work out what a garbage disposal repair in Aventura will cost?

Nothing sensible can be quoted down a telephone as a flat figure, because the word disposal does not describe a job. What moves the number is the state of the bracket, whether the unit survives its test or leaves on the van, the condition of the drain elbow and the dishwasher inlet, how wet the cupboard floor has been, and whether a lift window has to be reserved with your management office. A technician prices each of those where you can watch it being assessed, on a sheet that costs you nothing, and whatever you would rather postpone simply comes off it.

Who is actually going to be lying under my sink in Aventura, and what happens to everything stored in that cabinet?

A Gold Hands technician, booked under the name your front desk was given, arriving the way your building expects. The cupboard is emptied onto a protective mat before a bolt is touched and packed back exactly as it stood. Should a hinge, a tile or one of your own belongings come to harm while we are there, the message reaches you within the hour, in writing, with the remedy already proposed — you should never learn about it from a management email a week later.

My Aventura building restricts contractor hours and wants the service elevator reserved. Does that hold the job up?

It shapes the calendar rather than the work. The insurance certificate reaches your management office ahead of the visit, we take whatever dock and lift window they allocate, and the disruptive stretch is scheduled to fall within it. Water is shut at the stop valves within your own cupboard, so the riser serving the tower is never touched and the apartments above and below carry on without noticing.

Jammed or dead — which one is my Aventura disposal? I do not want to pay twice.

That is precisely the question the visit exists to settle. A unit that hums has power and a stuck plate, which reads as a jam until proved otherwise, and most of them come free. What decides the verdict is the behaviour afterwards: driven under a heavy pour of cold water, with something genuine in the chamber, listened to for drag and checked for heat. Free and smooth, keep it. Free but rough, or free then stalled again inside days, and the motor has been cooked — a new unit on the same bracket is then the thrifty move rather than the profitable one. You get told which, and told why.

My Aventura apartment is a rental. What has to reach the landlord first?

A line in writing naming the fault and the proposal, which the estimate is designed to carry unedited. Owners in these buildings care about two things above all: that nobody has improvised on the plumbing of a stacked tower, and that any replacement meets the standard the lease implies. When the visit closes you are sent images of the completed work below the sink together with notes on whatever we spotted and deliberately walked away from, so the condition of that cupboard is documented long before anyone raises it at move-out.

Can you replace an Aventura disposal that also has the dishwasher draining into it?

Yes, and it is worth saying that the dishwasher connection is where a surprising number of these jobs go wrong when they are rushed. The inlet spigot on a brand-new unit arrives with a moulded plug still sealed inside it, and a disposal fitted without that plug removed will send the dishwasher's water straight back into the machine. We take the hose off, clear it if it needs clearing, fit the new unit, open the inlet, reconnect with a proper high loop, and then run a full dishwasher cycle with the cabinet open and a light on it before the van leaves.

My disposal just hums but doesn't spin — do I need a new one?

Not always. A hum with no spin usually means the flywheel is jammed. We free it with an Allen wrench through the bottom reset hole and test it before recommending a replacement.

Do you supply the disposal unit?

You can buy your own model, or we can pick one up at cost. We will size the horsepower to your household's typical use if you want a recommendation.
