Gold Hands offers tile installation in Oakland Park, FL: floors, shower walls and pans, backsplashes and accent walls in porcelain, ceramic or natural stone, plus regrouting and repair of cracked or loose tiles. Every job is priced per project. Send photos and rough measurements by phone or WhatsApp and we return a free estimate, with no visit needed to get a number.

Requests we often get from Oakland Park: regrouting a shower that still has sound tile, replacing a cracked kitchen floor that sits on a concrete slab, tiling a laundry room, or adding a backsplash before a home goes on the market. Each one is a different scope. Some are about appearance and some are about water getting where it should not, and we look at both when we review your photos.

Message (786) 788-8714 by text or WhatsApp with the basics: which room, the approximate square footage or length and width, and clear photos taken in daylight. If there is a stain on a ceiling below or a soft spot near a toilet or tub, photograph that too, since it changes the plan. We work in English and Spanish and answer with a per-project estimate.

Retiling a mid-century house the right way

Oakland Park is an older, established Broward city where much of the housing is compact 1950s and 1960s concrete-block ranch houses, with newer townhomes and infill on some streets.

Some owners of older houses in the mid-century ranch streets and the Fort Lauderdale border want to keep the character of the original bathroom: small hex floor tile, a subway wall with a cap row, or a colored tile from the period. Matching vintage tile exactly is often impossible, but new tile in the same shapes and finishes is widely available, and we lay it in the traditional patterns so the room still reads as part of the house.

Plaster walls behave differently from drywall when they are cut or drilled, and old plaster can crack well past the area being worked on. For backsplashes and wall tile in these houses we score and cut carefully, protect nearby surfaces, and explain in advance where patching and paint may be needed at the edges of the new tile, so the finished edge looks intentional.

We list each item that applies to your project separately, so you can see where the prep ends and the finish work begins.

Replacing 1980s and 1990s tile in suburban houses

Many bathrooms in Oakland Park houses built in the 1980s and 1990s have a fiberglass tub with a tiled surround on drywall, or a tiled shower on greenboard. Those materials were common at the time but are not waterproof by themselves, and after years of use the board behind the tile is often soft near the bottom. A full retile replaces it with cement or foam board and a membrane.

Townhomes add a few considerations: shared walls, an association in some communities, and upstairs bathrooms that sit over a living room. For upstairs wet areas we pay close attention to waterproofing and to the toilet flange height after the new floor tile goes in, so the toilet seals properly and nothing drips into the ceiling below. We also check the floor height where tile meets the stairs or a hallway carpet.

How we take a tile job from estimate to walkthrough

  1. Free estimate by phone or WhatsApp: send photos, rough dimensions and, if you have picked one, the tile. We price the project as a whole and point out anything in the photos that needs a closer look.
  2. Agreement in writing: the scope, materials, who buys the tile, the layout direction, the schedule and how surprises behind the old tile will be handled are all written down before we start.
  3. Permits where required: ordinary retiling does not move plumbing. If yours turns into relocating plumbing or structural work, we tell you before quoting, and that part goes through our general contractor partner and the City of Oakland Park building department.
  4. Tile work: removal, prep, leveling and waterproofing come first, then setting from a center line so the cuts are balanced. We let materials cure properly between stages instead of rushing to grout.
  5. Final check and report: we walk the job with you, tap-test floors for hollow spots, confirm drains and thresholds, clean up, and send a short photo report of the finished work.

What sets the pace of a tile project

Hurricane season, June 1 through November 30, can shift schedules when storms close supply houses or delay deliveries, and it is a good reason to have materials on hand before a big floor is torn out. If the job grows into moving plumbing or structural work, permit review with the local building department adds time of its own, and we give you a realistic picture of that before you commit.

Tile Installation in Oakland Park — questions we get asked

Can you tile over old tile or over terrazzo?

Sometimes. Tiling over existing tile or terrazzo saves demolition but raises the floor, which affects doors, thresholds and transitions to other rooms, and it only works if the old surface is flat and firmly attached. In many older homes the terrazzo underneath is worth a look before deciding. We review your photos and tell you whether covering, removing or keeping the old floor makes more sense.

Do you come out to measure before giving an estimate?

Estimates are based on the photos and measurements you send, which is usually enough for a clear price. Take a wide picture of the space, close-ups of any damage, and the length and width of each area. If something cannot be judged from photos, such as a floor that may sit on a damaged subfloor, we tell you, and a paid site visit can be arranged.

Does hurricane season affect tile installation?

It can. Florida hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and storms can close supply houses, delay deliveries or pause work around landfall. We try to have tile and setting materials on hand before a large floor is torn up, so a delay does not leave you living on bare concrete. Exterior tile is scheduled with the weather in mind.

How do you handle cleanup?

Demolition debris is bagged and hauled away as it is created, not left in the yard or a hallway. We protect floors along the path in and out, cover nearby furniture, and vacuum at the end of each workday. When grouting is done we remove the haze from the tile surface and leave the area wiped down and ready to use once the materials have cured.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Spanish-speaking staff are available by phone, text and WhatsApp, and the estimate, scope and schedule can all be explained in Spanish. Many families we work with mix both languages at home, so feel free to write in whichever is easier. Just send your photos and measurements to (786) 788-8714 and tell us which language you prefer.
