In a house built between the 1950s and the 1970s the interesting part of this job is not the fixture, it is what is behind it. Plantation ceilings of that vintage hold boxes that have carried the same unit since the house was new, and when the old one finally comes away the conductors entering that box are frequently shorter than a fitter would choose and hard at the ends from fifty years of Florida attic heat. Add the low ceilings these ranches were built with - a great many sit under eight feet - and the answer is fixed before anyone opens a catalogue: a fixture whose body finishes within an inch or two of the ceiling, no stem, no glass dropping into the room. Measure floor to ceiling in the worst room, take a photograph of what is up there now, count the rooms you want done, and call (786) 788-8714 with those three things to hand. Where our work ends is worth stating at the outset. Fixture, yes. Wiring, no. Ask us to hang a new unit on a point that works, to fit a listed box where the framing will take one, to find a plate that covers the ring beneath it, to renew glass, diffusers and bulbs, or to finish a whole house in one pass, and that is exactly our trade. Ask for the position to be moved, for a dimmer where there has only ever been a toggle, for cable that does not yet run, for anything opened at the breaker panel, or for a job the county wants paperwork on, and the honest answer is an electrician's telephone number. Aluminium conductors end the conversation on the spot, and we say so standing under the ceiling rather than writing it on an invoice afterwards.

Two ZIP codes cover this city on our route. 33317 takes in part of Plantation together with the adjacent unincorporated pocket of Broadview Park, and the housing across it is modest and mostly older - ranch-style single-family homes with Spanish Eclectic and minimal-traditional touches, built largely between the 1950s and the 1970s on small to mid-sized lots, with some small apartment buildings folded in. 33324 is central Plantation, established and quieter, single-family homes from the 1970s and 1980s around areas like Jacaranda, plus townhomes, villas and golf-course communities.

Both halves are relevant to lighting for the same reason: age. Houses of this era were wired and fitted to the standards of their day and many still carry original panels, original boxes and original fittings, sometimes with a couple of layers of later decoration painted over them. Almost all of it is single storey, which makes the work straightforward from a ladder, and almost all of it has ceilings low enough that the fitting has to be chosen with a person's height in mind rather than a photograph.

What a fifty-year-old Plantation ceiling box actually holds

Taking down an original fitting in one of these houses is the diagnostic step, not the first step of the installation. Out comes the old unit and the box is visible for the first time in decades. Sometimes everything in it is in good order and the job continues without comment. Sometimes the tails are so short that there is barely enough to work with, or the insulation on them has gone brittle enough to flake when it is moved, and then the conversation changes.

That is the point at which we stop rather than improvise. A unit can be made to hang from almost anything if somebody is determined enough, and the result looks finished from the floor - which is exactly the problem. A box, or a set of conductors, in a state beyond what swapping a light should involve is work for a licensed electrician, we tell you so with the old fitting still in our hands, and the rest of the list carries on in the meantime.

Low ceilings and terrazzo floors in Plantation ranches

These houses were built low and they were built solid. Under eight feet is common through the bedroom and hallway ends, which rules out anything decorative with a drop no matter how well it photographs - a pendant that hangs into a low room is a purchase somebody eventually pays a second time to undo. What suits a room like that is a fitting that sits close against the ceiling and spreads its light sideways rather than straight down in a cone.

The floors change how we work as much as the ceilings change what we fit. Original terrazzo is still underfoot in a lot of Plantation houses, and it is unforgiving: hard, polished, and perfectly willing to take a mark from a ladder foot or a dropped screw. Padding goes down before the ladder does, every time, and the old fitting is set into a box on a cloth rather than rested on the floor while hands are busy overhead.

The ring the old dome left on a Plantation ceiling

There is a specific and very common outcome that nobody enjoys discovering late. A ceiling that has been rolled around a wide old dome three or four times over the decades carries a disc of original colour underneath it, sometimes with a faint ridge of built-up paint at the edge. Modern canopies are slimmer than the ones they replace. Set a narrow new one over that disc and a ring of older paint is left showing all the way round.

So the ring gets measured before anything is unscrewed, not after. If the new unit will not reach it, the choice is yours and there are three honest ones: colour brushed back into the disc while the fitting is down, use a medallion to bridge the difference deliberately, or pick something with a broader plate. What we will not do is hang it, notice, and say nothing. Ceiling fans are a different service with their own requirements, and they have a page of their own.

Light Fixture Installation in Plantation — questions we get asked

What decides the cost of replacing several fittings in a Plantation house?

The estimate is free, it is written, and it is itemised before a screwdriver comes out. The main drivers are how many positions there are, what each ceiling demands in the way of reach and access, whether the strap already up there will carry the new unit or has to be renewed, and whether anything is found in the box that pushes an item out of our scope entirely. Fittings you have already bought are handled differently from ones we collect, and that appears as its own line so nothing is buried in a single number.

Who comes to the house, and what protects a Plantation terrazzo floor while a ladder is moved through it?

A single named technician, given to you before the day, cleared long before he was ever sent to somebody's home. Ladder feet get felt underneath them on every surface but especially on terrazzo and tile, and the pads move with the ladder rather than being laid once inside the front door. Old units go into a carton as they come down instead of onto the floor, and that carton and all the packaging leave on the van unless you have a reason to keep a piece of it.

Broadview Park is not a city. Does anyone need to approve work in 33317 or elsewhere in Plantation?

For a straight replacement on an existing outlet, no - nothing changes outside the house and there is nothing to submit. Broadview Park is unincorporated Broward County rather than part of the City of Plantation, which matters only if a job turns out to need a permit, because the authority is different. Inside the gated and golf-course communities in 33324 the requirement is access rather than approval: the vendor expected at the gate and the visit inside the community's working hours.

Our Plantation ceiling has a dark halo around the old light. Will a new fitting cover it?

Only if it is wide enough, and we measure rather than hope. On older ceilings the mark is often more than sun-faded paint - decades of warm air circulating around a unit leaves its own shadow, sometimes with a small ridge of built-up paint at the edge. If the new plate reaches past all of that, the problem disappears with the old fitting. If it does not, the fix is ten minutes of ceiling work in the window when the position is bare, which is far easier then than at any other time, and we raise it before the old one is unscrewed.

We rent a house in Plantation with original 1960s lighting. Can it be changed?

Only with the landlord saying yes on paper, and only if the originals survive. In an older house those units are sometimes worth more to an owner than a tenant expects, so each one comes off carefully and goes into a carton in the garage rather than out to the kerb. At the end of the term they go back on the ceilings or stay in their carton, whichever the owner asked for at the start. If a management company runs the property, hand us the contact and we square it with them directly.

The switch in our Plantation hallway buzzes when the light is dimmed. Is that part of this job?

No, and that is a useful example of the boundary. Anything at the wall - a switch behaving oddly, a dimmer that hums, a new dimmer where there is currently a plain toggle - is electrical work rather than fixture work, and it goes to a licensed electrician. What we can tell you, because it comes up constantly in houses of this age, is whether the noise is the switch or the lamps in the fitting reacting to it, which occasionally saves a call-out. The fixture itself we replace; the switch behind it we do not.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there's currently just a light?

In most cases, yes. We verify the electrical box can support the fan's weight and motion, and upgrade the box if needed — that may add a small cost but keeps the installation safe.

Do you install recessed lighting?

Yes, into existing ceilings. Pricing depends on the number of lights and whether new wiring is needed to reach them.
